Anjelica Huston has bravely opened up about her battle with cancer for the first time.

The actress, 73, revealed to People that she had been diagnosed with cancer in 2019 and had privately battled the disease.

She was diagnosed after the release of her film John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum in 2019, admitting: “That was a very serious moment for me. I managed to survive it, and I’m proud of myself.”

Huston explained: “It’s not something that came lightly. It came as a big shock, but it made me conscious of what I shouldn’t do, of places I shouldn’t go.

“One of those places was taking life too seriously. So now when the opportunity arises, I laugh, and I try not to make a big deal out of things.”

The Witches star did not reveal which type of cancer she was diagnosed with, but revealed she is now “in the clear” after reaching the “four-year mark”.

When she was first told she was cancer-free four years ago, Huston revealed that she “just walked in my garden and smelled the roses and thought how clever I was” in celebration.

After keeping her health battle a secret for six years, Huston revealed that she decided to speak about it in order to help others see there can be hope.

She told the outlet: “Sometimes you feel like you don’t want to talk about it for the obvious reasons, but there’s a lot to be said for talking about it and getting it out there and celebrating the fact that one’s come through.

“Life is tenuous and wonderful. It also gives you the idea that the world is big and you can somehow match up to it. That you’re ready for whatever happens.”

After taking a few years off in the wake of her diagnosis, Huston has returned to the screen as Lady Tressilian in BritBox’s three-part limited series Agatha Christie’s Towards Zero, which premieres on April 16.

The Addams Family star also revealed that she isn’t planning on retiring anytime soon, joking: “I can’t imagine such a thing. I think it would be too much, even for me.”

Huston found fame in the 1980s after starring in the hit 1985 movie Prizzi’s Honor. The actress, who is the daughter of director John Huston and granddaughter of actor Walter Huston, went on to have many roles in iconic movies such as The Witches, The Royal Tenenbaums, and Crimes and Misdemeanors among many others.
