Adopting a dog or cat with a disability might not be for everyone — but for those who open their hearts, it can be one of the most rewarding experiences imaginable.
Sadly, many pets with special needs are abandoned, as was the case with Lunita, a sweet, disabled pup left behind on the streets of Salta, Argentina.
In May 2014, Lunita, a medium-sized dog unable to use her back legs, was discovered lying face-down on the sidewalk. She had been left with a worn-out wheelchair and a heartbreaking note listing her name, age, and a brief explanation from her previous owner — who had left without giving her food or water, stating only that they could no longer care for her.
Thankfully, a dog groomer spotted Lunita and contacted the rescue group LUBA Salta. Two volunteers quickly arrived and took her into their care. After some time in a shelter, she was moved to a foster home, and her story was shared online, hoping to find her a forever family.
Eventually, someone from the United States expressed interest in adopting Lunita. Donations helped cover the cost of bringing her overseas. Unfortunately, her first adoptive home didn’t work out — she was neglected and developed a painful staph infection from a mite-infested bed.
Despite the setback, Lunita’s story wasn’t over. She was taken in by another loving family, though by then she was severely underweight, suffering from scabies, a urinary tract infection, and had lost most of her fur from the waist down. Caring for her was a challenge — she cried in pain during cleanings, and her recovery was long and difficult. But with time, love, and medical care, Lunita bounced back.
She began to thrive in her new life. She made new friends, played in the snow for the first time, and even got to celebrate her 11th birthday with a special dog-friendly cake surrounded by people and pets who adored her.
That joyful day, June 15, 2018, turned out to be one of her last. Shortly after, Lunita grew ill and was admitted to the ICU. Her breathing worsened, and every time her oxygen was removed, her tongue turned blue. Her family made the heartbreaking decision to let her go peacefully, surrounded by love.
Lunita’s mom later wrote on Facebook, “I will never forget her and how much she meant to me. She changed my life forever. I loved her very much.”
Though her life was filled with challenges, Lunita’s final chapter was filled with love, care, and joy. Her story is one of strength, resilience, and the difference a second chance can make.
Let her journey be a reminder: no matter how hard things get, brighter days may still lie ahead.
Rest in peace, Lunita. Share her story to honor a truly special soul.
