Colin Farrell’s Emotional Decision for Son James: A Story of Love, Courage, and Planning for the Future
🙌 A Father First: Colin Farrell’s Greatest Role
Colin Farrell may be one of Hollywood’s most celebrated actors, but his most meaningful role has always been being a father to his 21-year-old son, James.
In a candid and emotional interview in 2024, Farrell, 48, shared a deeply personal decision that touched hearts around the world. Amid his thriving acting career, the Irish actor revealed that he and his former partner Kim Bordenave have made the heartbreaking yet forward-thinking decision to place their son in long-term care.
👶 The Early Years: Love, Discovery, and Diagnosis
Farrell became a first-time dad on September 12, 2003, when James was born. Speaking to the Irish Examiner in 2004, Farrell said: “He’ll always know who his dad is. Fatherhood for me is the ultimate success.”
But by the time James was 18 months old, his parents noticed delays in his development. Initially misdiagnosed with cerebral palsy, James was later diagnosed with Angelman syndrome, a rare neuro-genetic disorder that affects speech, balance, and movement.
“I thought he was just a chill baby. He wasn’t hitting benchmarks. We knew something was up,” Farrell recalled.
💔 Life With Angelman Syndrome
In 2007, Farrell publicly revealed James’ diagnosis. According to the Mayo Clinic, Angelman syndrome causes severe developmental delays, little to no speech, intellectual disability, and sometimes seizures. There is currently no cure.
“I remember asking, ‘What’s the life expectancy, and is there pain?’ The doctor told me, ‘Life expectancy is the same as yours and mine. And no, there’s no pain.’”
Despite the challenges, Farrell remained fully present, describing himself as a “hands-on dad” who changed diapers, attended every therapy session, and even administered emergency seizure medication during critical moments.
🎈 James Turns 21: Growing Into His Own
In September 2024, James celebrated his 21st birthday. Farrell proudly described his son as:
“Cheeky, bold, bright, and strong. He’s six foot tall now, with a mustache like Tom Selleck. He’s in a really good place.”
With James entering adulthood, Farrell launched the Colin Farrell Foundation, aimed at supporting people with intellectual disabilities. He spoke about how many children lose access to support systems once they turn 21, emphasizing his commitment to ensuring James and others like him have access to meaningful, connected lives.
📅 A Difficult But Loving Decision
In a heartfelt interview with Candis magazine, Farrell explained why he and Kim Bordenave decided on long-term care for James. It wasn’t exhaustion or frustration that led to the choice, but foresight and love.
“What if I have a heart attack tomorrow, and Kim has a car crash? Then James becomes a ward of the state. And we’d have no say in where he goes.”
Instead, the couple is now seeking a residential care facility that James can move into while his parents are still alive, healthy, and able to stay involved in his life.
“We want him somewhere he can feel connected—going to the supermarket, the beach, the movies. Just living a normal, happy life with support and freedom.”
🚀 Planning With Purpose
Colin Farrell’s transparency offers a moving reminder of the challenges parents of children with special needs face, even as they grow older. His choice to prioritize James’ future security while still being an active presence in his life has touched families around the globe.
Farrell summed up the sentiment perfectly:
“I just want the world to be kind to James. And for him to always feel that he belongs.”
Through this decision, Colin Farrell is leading with love — showing that true strength comes not just from what we give our children today, but from what we build for their tomorrows.
