Let’s face it—when it comes to personal hygiene, everyone has their own habits. But one question people often ponder is how often they should actually be changing their underwear.

The internet has long debated topics related to cleanliness. Whether it’s about washing your legs, swapping out your bedding, or how often you should step into the shower, opinions always seem to vary wildly.

However, this question about underwear might just be one of the most debated of all.

Most of us assume the answer is simple: every single day. But, according to some medics, the reality might not be quite as straightforward.

The frequency with which you should swap out your underwear can depend on a few factors, including the type of underwear you wear and how much you tend to sweat.

It’s definitely a tricky topic, but understanding the nuances can make a big difference.

If your go-to style happens to be looser-fitting options like boxer shorts, you might be able to stretch their wear a little longer—though, let’s keep that between us!

Dermatologist Dr. Anju Methil, while speaking to the Daily Mail, had this to say: “In situations with minimal activity and no sweating, changing [underwear] every other day may be acceptable.”

So, while changing daily is a good general rule, it’s not entirely set in stone for everyone.

Dr. Methil also noted: “Men’s looser-fitting styles, like boxers, may also allow for slightly longer wear.”

A 2023 Newsweek poll found that nearly 47 percent of people said they change their underwear every day, which lines up with what many of us were taught growing up.

Still, experts warn that reusing underwear too often can lead to various skin-related problems, making daily changes a healthier option overall.

Licensed skincare specialist Sarah Roberts chimed in on the discussion, advising: “Men and women risk skin irritation, rashes, or the worsening of pre-existing conditions such as eczema or psoriasis when they re-wear underwear too often without washing it; this is due to friction and trapped moisture.”

It seems the risks don’t just end there. The design and purpose of underwear—whether for men or women—also plays a role in determining how long they can be worn before changing.

Styles designed specifically for men are often made to allow for slightly extended wear without immediate issues.

However, Roberts added an important caveat: “Men’s boxers, although touching the skin less frequently than women’s underwear, do not escape these hazards — particularly when worn repeatedly without change.”

For women, the stakes can be even higher. Wearing the same underwear repeatedly without washing can lead to unpleasant health issues like yeast infections or bacterial vaginosis, which can cause significant discomfort.

So, frequent changes are especially critical in maintaining vaginal health.

There are also other factors to consider. Dr. Archit Aggarwal, a dermatologist, explained that individuals dealing with heavy menstruation or significant vaginal discharge should ideally change their underwear more than once a day.

Physical activities, particularly those that cause excessive sweating and friction, can also contribute to rashes and irritation, making frequent changes necessary.

Dermatologist Dr. Hannah Kopelman summed it up best: “For those engaged in intense physical activities or who sweat heavily, it’s advisable to change underwear more frequently.”

Even the weather can play a big role in how often you should be swapping your underwear. In hotter and more humid climates, changing your underwear multiple times a day might be necessary to stay comfortable and maintain good hygiene.

Dr. Kopelman added this helpful advice: “In hot and humid climates, changing underwear even more than once a day might be necessary to maintain good hygiene.”

Ultimately, how often you change your underwear depends on your lifestyle, but staying mindful of these factors can help you maintain better hygiene and overall health.
