After months without contact, a 27-year-old journalist’s body was returned to Ukraine by Russia—missing vital organs and showing signs of brutal mistreatment, according to multiple reports.

Victoria Roshchyna, a Ukrainian journalist who vanished in August 2023 while traveling through Russian-occupied Ukraine, was officially confirmed dead earlier this year.

Her body was sent back to Ukraine in February as part of a posthumous exchange. But according to CNN, Ukrainian investigators now say her final months were marked by extreme suffering.

Yuriy Belousov, who leads the war crimes unit at Ukraine’s Prosecutor General’s Office, revealed that the forensic team uncovered “numerous signs of torture and ill-treatment,” including “abrasions and hemorrhages on various parts of the body, a broken rib and possible traces of electric shock.”

He said the injuries appeared to have happened while Roshchyna was still alive.

Even though her body arrived labeled as “an unidentified male.”, DNA testing confirmed the remains were hers. Colleagues and officials say the removal of her brain, eyes, and part of her trachea may have been an intentional effort to hide the real cause of death, as reported by NBC News.

“Vika was always where the most important events for the country took place. And she would have continued to do this for many years, but the Russians killed her,” shared journalist Evgeniya Motorevskaya, who once worked alongside Roshchyna at Hromadske, in a heartfelt tribute.

Roshchyna was respected for her bold journalism in Russian-controlled areas, where few dared to go. She was working with Ukrainska Pravda and Radio Free Europe and had gone to Zaporizhzhia to report on the detention and torture of Ukrainian civilians. She disappeared not long after crossing into the region.

For months, her loved ones were left without answers. Then, nearly nine months later, Russia’s Defense Ministry finally confirmed she had been detained in Taganrog—a facility infamous for its harsh treatment and abuse. In September, officials said she died while being transferred to Moscow, supposedly for a planned prisoner swap.

But by then, it was already too late.

When her body was returned, it was missing critical organs, and investigators believe the state it arrived in may have been an attempt to hide what really happened.

Now, a team of journalists from around the world—including those from Forbidden Stories—has teamed up with Ukrainian media to piece together the truth about her final moments.

Motorevskaya, reflecting on her colleague’s dedication to journalism, stated: “For her, there was nothing more important than journalism. Vika was always where the most important events for the country took place. And she would have continued to do this for many years, but the Russians killed her.”

According to Ukrainian authorities, thousands of civilians are still being held by Russia without access to legal representation. Many were abducted from occupied regions and transported into Russian detention centers.

“The issue of civilian hostages abducted and held by Russia requires increased international attention and immediate and strong response,” wrote foreign ministry spokesperson Georgiy Tykhy on X.

Roshchyna is the first confirmed Ukrainian journalist to die in Russian captivity.

Meanwhile, former U.S. President Donald Trump has weighed in on the conflict in Ukraine, sharing what he believes are Vladimir Putin’s real intentions during an interview with ABC News as part of his “100 Days” media blitz.

“If it weren’t for me, I think [Putin] want to take over the whole country [Ukraine],” Trump said. “I will tell you, I was not happy when I saw Putin shooting missiles into a few towns and cities.”

That wasn’t the only time Trump spoke out this week. In a Truth Social post on April 26, he criticized “The Failing New York Times” and predicted they would criticize any peace deal he might broker—“even if it’s the greatest deal ever made”

“This is Sleepy Joe Biden’s War, not mine,” he added. “It was a loser from day one, and should have never happened, and wouldn’t have happened if I were President at the time. I’m just trying to clean up the mess that was left to me by Obama and Biden, and what a mess it is.”

But in an unexpected shift, Trump also took direct aim at Putin, questioning whether he truly wants to end the war—especially in light of Russia’s latest deadly missile strike on Kyiv.

“With all of that being said, there was no reason for Putin to be shooting missiles into civilian areas, cities and towns, over the last few days.”

“It makes me think that maybe he doesn’t want to stop the war, he’s just tapping me along, and has to be dealt with differently, through ‘Banking’ or ‘Secondary Sanctions?’ Too many people are dying!!!”
