Luke Bryan Has a Clear Favorite

With the American Idol Season 23 finale just days away, emotions are running high and predictions are pouring in. After a season filled with unforgettable performances, the final three contestants have been named: Jamal Roberts, John Foster, and Breanna Nix.

But in a behind-the-scenes interview following the May 12 live show, Luke Bryan made it clear — he’s following his instincts, and all signs point to Jamal.

“My Gut Says Jamal’s Had the Lead All Year”

Speaking candidly, the country superstar and longtime Idol judge praised Jamal Roberts’ consistency and charisma:

“My gut has told me Jamal has had the lead all year,” Bryan, 48, said. “He’s been consistent, he’s been commanding… he’s had the reins.”

But Bryan, always aware of Idol’s unpredictable nature, quickly acknowledged the strength of the other two finalists:

  • “Breanna just keeps coming back stronger — she surprises us every week.”

  • “And John Foster? He’s picking up serious steam. Momentum like his can be a game-changer.”

 It’s Still Anyone’s Game

Bryan noted that this stage of the competition is as much about mental strength and timing as it is about vocal talent:

“You can’t afford to lose focus for even a second. This is the music business. Every day counts.”

Fellow judge Lionel Richie echoed that sentiment, but emphasized a different factor: likability.

“It’s not necessarily the best singer who wins,” Richie said. “It’s who the fans connect with — who they’re rooting for, not just as an artist, but as a person.”

According to Richie, America isn’t just voting on vocals — they’re voting on values, vulnerability, and authenticity.

Carrie Underwood Reflects on the Finale Experience

Carrie Underwood, who won Idol in 2005, weighed in with her own perspective — and a reality check:

“They’ve had a much shorter season than I did,” she explained. “Everything’s moving at lightning speed, and I’m sure they feel like they’re sprinting just to keep up.”

She likened the finale week to “star boot camp”:

“This is just a taste of the real world as an artist. They’ll be running nonstop — returning home, performing, promoting — and the pressure only grows from here.”

The Top 3: Finalists Competing for the Crown

  • Jamal Roberts – Soulful powerhouse and father of three from Meridian, Mississippi

  • John Foster – Country heartthrob and fan favorite from Addis, Louisiana

  • Breanna Nix – Inspirational pop vocalist and devoted mom from Denton, Texas

The finale line-up reflects the diversity of talent Idol is known for — but only one will walk away with the title.
