In July 2017, Erin Hester spotted a soldier standing at attention in the pouring rain as a funeral procession passed in Vine Grove, Kentucky. He wasn’t part of the procession—just showing silent respect.
Moved by the gesture, Hester shared a photo on Facebook, praising his actions and calling attention to the lack of respect often shown during such moments. The photo quickly went viral.
The soldier was later identified as **Col. Jack L. Usrey** of the Tennessee Army National Guard. Humble in response, he credited his parents for teaching him respect:
**“I hoped my small action would let the family know we care.”**
A simple gesture, but a powerful message of honor and humanity.
