Everybody has to go at some point, but are you wiping the right way? Turns out, there’s only one correct method, and if you’re not doing it properly, you might be making a messy mistake.

It’s probably something you don’t even think about, but keeping things clean after using the bathroom is more important than you might realize.

Luckily, thanks to modern hygiene practices, there are several ways to make sure you’re leaving the restroom feeling fresh and not, well, regretting your life choices.

That said, just because you’ve been doing it a certain way for years doesn’t necessarily mean you’ve been doing it right.

Think about it—would you really want to find out you’ve been wiping wrong all along? Probably not.

Ignoring this might not seem like a big deal, but if someone ever found out your technique was all wrong, let’s just say it would be an embarrassing conversation.

Fortunately, there is an answer. Experts have weighed in, and the proper way to clean yourself after using the toilet is finally confirmed.

If this is already part of your routine, great! But if not, it’s time to reconsider your method.

According to a video shared by YouTuber Manny Meachum, different cultures approach this basic hygiene task in various ways.

For example, people in the UK tend to wipe quickly and, apparently, not always thoroughly.

In Russia, there’s a claim (which we hope is a joke) that some use a pogo stick-like tool with toilet paper attached.

Then, in the U.S., many fold their toilet paper neatly after each wipe, finishing off with wet wipes for that extra clean feeling.

Meanwhile, many parts of Europe favor using a bidet, which, unsurprisingly, seems to be the superior option for hygiene.

But if using water isn’t your thing, it’s still crucial to make sure you’re wiping the right way.

According to Amber J. Tresca, a digestive health expert from VeryWell, there is only one correct way to wipe.

Front to back.

After you’ve finished your business, always wipe from front to back. This method is especially important for people with vaginas, as it helps prevent bacteria from entering the urethra, reducing the risk of painful urinary tract infections (UTIs).

For those with a penis, while UTIs are less common, wiping front to back is still a good practice. It helps avoid unwanted residue getting trapped under the foreskin or on the tip of the penis, which no one wants.

The process is simple but effective. Grab some toilet paper, reach behind your back or between your legs, and wipe in the direction toward the back of the toilet.

Continue wiping with clean tissue or wet wipes until there is no more visible residue.

One thing to avoid? Scrubbing too hard. This can cause tiny tears in the skin, allowing bacteria to enter and potentially causing infections.

If reaching behind is difficult, you can wipe from between your legs, as long as the motion is still from front to back.

If the situation is particularly messy, taking a quick shower is the best option. But if that’s not possible, carrying wet wipes and a spare pair of underwear can be a lifesaver.
