This prestigious recognition was announced on May 16 by the National Amusement Park Historical Association, following a nationwide vote that put Dollywood ahead of top competitors like California’s Disneyland.
Nestled in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, at the foot of the Great Smoky Mountains, Dollywood stands not only as a top-tier amusement destination but also as a heartfelt tribute to its co-owner, Dolly Parton. The country music legend’s fingerprints are all over the park’s mission and magic.
A Legacy of Gratitude
Dolly Parton, who grew up just a short drive from where Dollywood now thrives, launched the park in 1986 as a way to give back to her hometown and uplift the community that nurtured her. “I’m just proud to be part of this whole community,” Parton recently shared. “Dollywood is a shining star, certainly to me, but evidently to a lot of other people, too.”
Over the decades, Dollywood has become more than a beloved attraction. It’s now the largest employer in the region, supporting nearly 4,000 jobs and serving as a cornerstone of the local economy.

This year also marked Dollywood’s 40th season, and Parton was front and center to celebrate the park’s incredible journey. During the festivities, she reflected on Dollywood’s impact in transforming the region:
“When Dollywood did open and when we started opening our dinner theaters, it just brought so many more tourists in, and other people started building other businesses and hotels.”
