Jake Rosencranz and his wife Leah were finally enjoying their long-awaited honeymoon in Florida when tragedy struck. On June 20, Jake, 29, was standing in ankle-deep water at New Smyrna Beach when he was unexpectedly struck by lightning during a storm that was still several miles away.

Lifeguards quickly performed CPR and rushed him to AdventHealth hospital, but despite their efforts, Jake sadly passed away the following day. This was Florida’s first lightning-related death of 2025.

Jake and Leah’s story was one of love and adventure. They met in high school chemistry class and had built a life together filled with outdoor activities in Colorado. They married in July 2023 at a ski area that was special to them, but had delayed their honeymoon until now.

The community has expressed deep sorrow for the loss, and Jake’s brother-in-law started a GoFundMe campaign to support Leah with medical bills and other expenses. Jake was remembered as a devoted husband and beloved family member.

On the same day, two others were also struck by lightning while golfing nearby, but survived without serious injuries.

Jake’s sudden death shocked everyone and turned a joyful honeymoon into a heartbreaking tragedy.
