For seven long months, a sweet dog named Lancer sat quietly in his kennel at City of Mobile Animal Services in Alabama. He watched as other dogs came and went, while he remained — overlooked, ignored, and without a single request to meet him.

But Lancer never gave up hope.

”He would stick out his paw..”

Each day, when people walked past his kennel, Lancer had a silent way of asking for love. He’d press his body against the bars and slowly slide one paw through, gently reaching out — as if to say, “Please, just give me a chance.”

“Whenever someone would walk past his kennel, he would stick out his paw in an attempt for someone to hold it,” said Mary Kate Hale, digital media manager for City of Mobile Animal Services.

It broke the hearts of those who worked at the shelter. Lancer had the kindest soul and a goofy love for peanut butter. He was playful, full of “zoomies,” and loved to sprawl out like a frog in the shade when it was nap time. Yet, he remained invisible to the world.

“Lancer is known for his sweet nature and love of peanut butter,” Hale shared. “After a round of zoomies, he can be found napping in a shaded spot with his legs sprawled out like a frog’s.”

Then one day, everything changed. A shelter volunteer noticed Lancer doing his signature paw move and decided to snap a photo. That picture — so simple yet full of longing — was shared on social media with a short caption about his gentle heart.

The internet reacted instantly.

“Within 24 hours of being posted on Facebook, Lancer caught the attention of his future dad, Nick,” Hale said.

Nick saw the photo and felt an immediate connection. He saw the sweetness in Lancer’s eyes — and the quiet plea behind that outstretched paw. He knew right away: this was his dog.

Not long after, Lancer left the shelter for good.

Now, he’s finally home — surrounded by love, treats, and belly rubs. And every time he reaches out his paw, it’s no longer unanswered. His dad is always right there, holding it back.

After seven months of waiting, Lancer’s paw finally found the hand it was reaching for.
