While there has been growing concern among health professionals about the rising number of bowel cancer cases in younger people, that’s not the only cancer we need to watch out for.
There’s another serious form of cancer that can develop quietly, with many people completely unaware they’re even at risk until it’s already quite advanced.
Gut health expert Dr. Wendi LeBrett explained that a common symptom—one that many overlook—could actually be a ticking time bomb leading to this cancer, and countless people aren’t even aware of it.
She highlighted that acid reflux is far more widespread than people realise, and many are living with it without knowing.
This condition happens when stomach acid flows back into the throat, which can cause a burning sensation as it irritates the oesophagus along the way.

Oesophageal cancer starts in the oesophagus, which is the tube that carries food and drink from your mouth down into the stomach.
This cancer is often only discovered in its later stages because its early signs are usually brushed off as nothing more than mild reflux symptoms.
According to Dr. LeBrett, only about one in three people who have acid reflux will actually show the more noticeable, typical signs.
In a TikTok video, she explained: “About 60 to 70 percent of people who have acid reflux have the typical symptom of heartburn — the burning sensation in your chest often after eating. That means around one in three do not have typical symptoms or know they have the condition.”
Little known symptoms of acid reflux
That’s why it’s so important to pay attention to any less obvious signs of acid reflux, even if they seem minor at first glance.

“Breathing problems can also be a symptom as the acid irritates the airways and can exacerbate conditions like asthma.”
She also pointed out: “Problems swallowing is also an atypical symptom.”
If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms—or you’ve noticed things like yellowing or cracking in your teeth—it’s a smart idea to check in with a medical professional.
Another viewer wrote: “Not me having a chronic cough because of my acid, getting it checked next Monday.”
According to NHS guidelines, the typical symptoms of acid reflux include heartburn, a sour taste rising from the chest or throat, persistent hiccups or coughing, and frequent burping.
If you notice these kinds of symptoms sticking around, it’s definitely worth talking to your GP to find ways to manage them properly.
