The 1995 hit-sitcom, which follows the story of six reckless friends living in Manhattan, has most definitely stood the test of time.

Despite being released over 30 years ago, last year, Friends still accumulated 418 million hours of viewing time on Netflix between January and June.

Fans of the series are now heartbroken to learn that one of its stars has passed away.

One says: “May his soul rest in peace and paradise.”

As another writes: “What a proud age to pass. A life well lived.”

New Jersey-born actor Jack Betts, who starred in the sitcom, died on June 19 at the age of 96.

The actor was born in Miami in 1929, and went onto study at the state’s university.

His acting career spanned many decades, after making his debut through Broadway’s adaptation of Shakespeare’s Richard III, Far Out, upon completing his theater degree.

He was close friends with Everybody Loves Raymond star Doris Roberts, who he went onto share a house with, but died in his sleep at his home in Los Osos, California.

After Roberts’ death in 2016, the 96-year-old described the two as ‘best friends to the very end,’ and noted that they had shared ‘wonderful times together.’

Despite rumors that the two were an item, an Everybody Loves Raymond fan account clarified the reality of their relationship, posting on Instagram: “He was not Doris Robert’s husband as has been reported elsewhere.”

But Friends wasn’t the only sensation that the actor went onto star in.

The 96-year-old was also known for his role as Henry Balkan, in the 2002 Spiderman film alongside Toby McGuire.

Betts’ nephew, Dean Sullivan, was the one to break the sad news on Thursday (June 19).

Following the announcement being made public, Beverly Hills Playhouse, an acting school located in the region, released a heartfelt statement.

They said: “Our beloved Jack Betts passed away peacefully at home.

“It is a sad day for the BHP as we have enjoyed his presence for so many years.

“There are actors who credit him with not giving up because of his encouragement.

“We were so fortunate to have enjoyed his great spirit, passion and true dedication to the work.”

The company noted that there was only going to ever be ‘one of him’ and that the theater was made ‘richer’ by his life.

Betts appeared in the Friends episode titled ‘The One With Joey’s New Brain,’ which is part of season seven.

He also had memorable roles in Batman Forever and Batman & Robin.
