Back in 2011, 65-year-old Maurice Desjardins experienced a tragic accident that changed everything. During a hunting trip, a rifle misfired, causing a severe injury to his face.
The damage was extreme — his facial bones, skin, nose, mouth, nerves, and teeth were destroyed. Maurice was left unrecognizable, his face disfigured beyond repair.
His wife, Gaétane, became his full-time caregiver, leaving her job to support him through years of emotional and physical pain. Doctors had to create an opening in his neck so he could breathe, as even that became difficult after the accident.
On his GoFundMe page, Maurice shared just how hard life became. “For seven years, I lived without a face. I couldn’t talk, eat, drink, or breathe properly. I relied on a tracheostomy to survive. I spent three of those years waiting for a transplant.”
In May 2018, after nearly a decade of suffering, Maurice underwent a groundbreaking face transplant surgery — a moment he called “the greatest gift” and a “new beginning.”
The complex operation was led by Dr. Daniel Borsuk, who made sure Maurice understood the risks. “I had to tell him honestly — he might not survive the surgery,” the doctor explained. “When I warned him, Maurice just asked, ‘Do you think I’m really living now?’”
Maurice had lost all hope of a normal life. “People stare. People judge. I’d rather risk everything than keep going like this,” he said. “I didn’t care what the face looked like. I just wanted to look like a person again,” according to CBC News.
