As devastating flash floods ripped through a campground in Texas, a couple’s quick thinking and simple act reportedly helped save many lives.

So far, at least 104 lives have been lost in central Texas due to the flooding, and emergency crews are still searching for others who may be missing. The powerful floods destroyed everything in their path including trailers, cars, and even vacation cabins where people were celebrating the Fourth of July holiday.

In just a few hours, the area was hit with what would normally be a full month’s worth of rain. That sudden downpour caused the Guadalupe River to surge up to a dangerous height of 26 feet, catching many off guard.

This summer, Lyle and Sue Glenna from Minnesota had been staying and working at a campground right along the Guadalupe River. Thankfully, they managed to survive the disaster. But more than that, they took action that helped alert others just in time to escape as well.

According to CBS News, their son Wes Glenna said: “They were able to get into their truck and they were able to honk a warning out to a lot of people at the campground, which definitely helped some people make it out.”

More details about the couple’s actions were shared in a GoFundMe update that read: “They were able to save many lives at the campground by having the presence of mind to honk their horn and wake people up, giving precious minutes for some to evacuate.”

In the short span of under 10 minutes, Lyle and Sue were able to reach safety. But in that tiny window of time, their entire campground was overwhelmed by rising floodwaters.

“They lost friends, visitors, co-workers, definitely. They got to watch it happen and it was very tragic for them for sure.” Wes said, reflecting on the emotional toll it took on his parents.

“They lost everything. They have nothing except for their truck and the clothes on their backs.”

Amid the chaos of the flood, Lyle even suffered a heart attack. Fortunately, his son Wes shared that he is expected to make a full recovery, which came as a huge relief to their loved ones.

The fundraiser set up on GoFundMe to support the Glennas after the flooding has raised over $20,000 so far. That money has already made a meaningful difference in their lives.

In one of the campaign updates, the organizers shared: “The funds have already been put to good use. Lyle was able to leave the hospital today. They wouldn’t release him without a new C-PAP machine.”

“Thanks to your kindness, it was something they were able to do quickly and without stress. Again, thank you.”

“We’re still not sure what insurance will cover, or when funds even will be available. The donations are going to help them begin to rebuild their lives immediately and completely.”
