Witnessing this incredible moment was truly rare—a massive leatherback turtle emerged from the ocean to bask in the sun on the sandy shore. Unlike other turtle species, leatherbacks don’t have a hard outer shell.

Their name comes from the tough, leathery skin that covers their backs. These turtles are solitary by nature and tend to keep to themselves, except during the nesting season.

Like other turtles, they come ashore to lay their eggs in the sand. Once the hatchlings emerge, they instinctively make their way to the sea alone. Leatherbacks are capable of diving to great depths in search of jellyfish, which they can consume even in extremely cold waters.

These giants of the sea can have flippers that span up to three meters in length.

Encountering a creature like this is incredibly special—it serves as a reminder of the richness and diversity of the natural world. From the variety in shapes and sizes to the uniqueness of each species, it’s a powerful call to show greater respect and care for wildlife.
