In 2009, in a village in China’s Hunan Province ,Ileon Xie gave birth to her first child, a boy named Hu Kang. Like any mother , she couldn’t wait to see her son .

But what she saw a few hours after giving birth was forever etched in her memory.

When the babyn was brought to her, the mother was frozen with horror. Hu Kang had a rare and severe pathology – bilateral transverse cleft of the face.

The front of his skull had not had time to fuse during fetal development, leaving two deep lacerations running from the corners of his mouth to his ears. This gave him a frightening, almost mask – like appearance .

The family was desperate .Doctors said that treatment was possible, but extremely expensive. In 2010 ,Ileon decided to seek help.

She told her story to reporters, and the photos of little Hu Kang stirred up the public. People from all over China – and later from abroad– began donating money for his treatment.

Thanks to the funds raised, Hu Kang underwent two complex surgeries.

Surgeons tried to restore the symmetry of his face, and although the initial result was far from ideal, doctors assured that real changes would appear within 10 years.

And they were not wrong.

In photographs taken several years after the operations, Hu Kang is now a smiling schoolboy. The deep clefts have disappeared, leaving only barely noticeable traces.
