Heart Attack Warning Signs You Should Never Ignore

According to the World Health Organization, ischaemic heart disease remains the leading cause of death globally, with 8.9 million deaths in 2019. Research shows that in the days or even months leading up to a heart attack, many people experience prodromal symptoms—early warning signs that are often ignored.

A study published in The National Library of Medicine notes that these symptoms are commonly overlooked by both patients and clinicians. Some of the most frequently reported include chest pain, shortness of breath, fatigue, dizziness, sleep disturbances, and anxiety.

1. Fatigue
Feeling unusually tired or drained without reason could signal restricted blood flow to the heart, especially when arteries are narrowed.

2. Shortness of Breath
When the lungs don’t receive enough oxygen, breathing becomes labored. This can be a red flag for heart failure or an impending heart attack.

3. Weakness
Sudden, unexplained weakness may be the body’s way of signaling cardiovascular trouble.

4. Dizziness & Cold Sweats
Poor blood circulation can cause lightheadedness and cold, clammy skin—serious symptoms not to be ignored.

5. Flu-like Symptoms
Some heart attack survivors report having flu-like symptoms such as fatigue and body aches days before the attack.

6. Chest Pressure
A growing pressure or heaviness in the chest is a classic sign of a heart attack and should be addressed immediately.

7. Swollen Feet or Ankles
Swelling can indicate congestive heart failure, where the heart struggles to pump blood effectively.

If you or someone you know experiences any of these symptoms, seek medical advice immediately. Early recognition can save lives.
