As Jamal Roberts gears up to compete in the American Idol Season 23 finale, he took a heartfelt detour back to the place where it all began — his hometown of Meridian, Mississippi.
The 27-year-old PE teacher, father of three, and now national music sensation, was officially announced as a Top 3 finalist by host Ryan Seacrest during the live episode on Monday night. Roberts will now go head-to-head with fellow finalists Breanna Nix, a stay-at-home mom from Texas, and John Foster, a teenage country crooner from Louisiana.
But before stepping onto the Idol stage for the biggest performance of his life, Jamal returned home — and the welcome he received was nothing short of electric.
A Hero’s Welcome at Crestwood Elementary
On Wednesday, students and staff at Crestwood Elementary School in Meridian thought they were gathering in the cafeteria for a simple fifth-grade vs. teachers kickball meeting. Instead, they were surprised by a special appearance from their beloved hometown star.
“It is awesome seeing him come back,” said Deyantah Curry, a teacher at Crestwood. “The kids have been waiting. They’ve been watching his videos on YouTube. They remind each other when to vote. The excitement in the room was just incredible.”
Roberts, a former educator in the community, shared hugs, smiles, and even a few emotional words with students and faculty who have supported him long before his Idol journey began.
“There’s No Fame — It’s Just Jamal”
In a recent interview with SuperTalk Mississippi News, Roberts opened up about the deep connection he shares with Meridian.
“Growing up in Meridian, the people who are there — I still know them. I’m able to walk outside and speak with people I’ve known for years,” he said.
“There’s no fame. It’s just Jamal. I don’t have to change or try to be somebody I’m not. They’re always here for me.”
It’s that sense of grounded humility that’s helped him stand out among Idol contestants this season — both vocally and personally.
From Setbacks to Stardom
For Roberts, this moment is especially meaningful. He previously appeared on the show Sunday Best during the COVID era, but the experience didn’t lead to major exposure — something he now sees as a blessing in disguise.
“Sunday Best was recorded during COVID. I didn’t get much out of it,” he shared. “I got cut loose — but I’m thankful I did, because if that never would’ve happened, this never would’ve happened.”
Now, as one of the most talked-about voices in America, Roberts is on the verge of something truly life-changing.
What’s Next: The Idol Finale
Jamal Roberts will return to the national spotlight for the American Idol Season 23 Grand Finale, airing Sunday, May 18 at 8:00 PM ET on ABC. The episode will feature special performances, surprise guest appearances, and the announcement of this year’s winner.
Whether or not Roberts takes the crown, one thing is clear: in the eyes of Meridian — and countless fans across the country — he’s already a champion.
