Their shopping list is impressive: 17 three-litre bottles of milk, 14 boxes of cereal, 45 tubs of yogurt, and four dozen eggs. “We go through 50 litres of milk each week and one to two loaves of bread every day,” Jeni shares.

With such a large clan, even simple tasks become monumental. “Getting a good family photo is difficult,” Jeni laughs. “You need an extra-wide lens, and there’s always someone looking away, pulling a funny face, or with their eyes closed.” These imperfections, however, add to the family’s unique charm.

The Bonells’ daily routine is a carefully choreographed dance. Jeni reflects, “I used to think life was busy with little kids, but I’m certainly busier these days with older children.” Coordinating three different schools, various sporting activities, part-time jobs, and the older kids’ studies requires exceptional organizational skills. Despite the challenges, Jeni embraces the chaos, stating, “Life is very hectic – but it’s good.”

Evenings at the Bonell household are lively and unpredictable. “Take an average-sized family and multiply it by eight, and that’s what our evening routine is like,” Jeni jokes. Dinner is a cornerstone of their family life, with attendance varying from eight to over twenty people. Regardless of the number, Jeni ensures that “dinner is always great.”

In today’s economic climate, budgeting is crucial. “It’s a struggle for everyone at the moment,” Jeni acknowledges. To maintain order and teach responsibility, the Bonells implement a chore chart, assigning tasks to children aged eight and above. Cooking skills are also emphasized; Jeni proudly notes, “Our 12-year-old can put a roast dinner on for 20 people with almost no supervision.”

The Bonell family’s strong Christian faith is central to their lives. They actively participate in their church community, finding strength and support in their beliefs. Jeni reflects on the challenges of faith, stating, “Some days it’s hard to be a Christian… Actually, most days it’s hard to be a Christian.” Despite these challenges, their faith remains a guiding force.
