After nearly 100 years, marine scientists have identified the wreck of the SS Cotopaxi, a cargo ship that disappeared in 1925 and became a famous Bermuda Triangle mystery.

The ship left Charleston, South Carolina, headed to Havana with 32 crew but vanished without a trace. For decades, wild theories like alien abductions and time warps surrounded its fate.

Marine biologist Michael Barnette uncovered the wreck off St. Augustine, Florida, and found the ship was poorly maintained. During a violent storm, the damaged Cotopaxi couldn’t survive the harsh conditions.

A forgotten distress call from December 1, 1925, confirmed the ship’s struggle in the storm before it sank.

This discovery debunks the sensational myths but honors the real story of tragedy and loss. The Cotopaxi’s wreck is now a memorial to those lost and a reminder of the sea’s power. With its mystery solved, one more Bermuda Triangle legend comes to a close—though many others remain.
