If there’s one thing that most people seem to have these days it’s an opinion, especially when it comes to politics. Sometimes, people may applaud you for your efforts and at other times, it could land you in hot water.
Recently, Christy Walton, an heiress of Walmart received a lot of negative feedback online after publishing a full-page ad in one of the largest papers in the United States. It was a critique of President Donald Trump and his stand to ‘Make America Great Again’.
The ad was published on June 14, tied to ‘No Kings Day’, Trump’s birthday, the 250 anniversary of the U.S. Army, and Flag Day. In the ad, people were told to honor alliances, take part in civic discourse, and reject dictators.
Even though the ad did not name Donald Trump by name, it was a pointed political statement and tensions ran high.
Some of the negative feedback came from a right-wing account on X, which is urging MAGA supporters to boycott Walmart. This comes after the ad, funded by Christy Walton, which was promoting the ‘No Kings’ protests.
Libs of Chicago shared the image of the full paid ad, which ran in the New York Times. The ad, which was paid for by the widow of John T Walton, who was the son of Walmart founder Sam Walton called for civic engagement and for people to resist dictators.
The social media post critiqued her involvement, saying: “One of the ppl funding the socialist movement is Christy Ruth Walton who is a stake holder of @Walmart. Sort of ironic isn’t it? A Walton married a socialist. If there was ever a time to boycott Walmart, it’s now.”
The ad said: “WE honor our commitments and stand by our allies, WE defend against aggression by dictators, WE respect our neighbors and trading partners.
“We are the people of the United States of America,” the ad declared. “The honor, dignity, and integrity of our country are not for sale… Our government is of the people, by the people, for the people.”
After being posted, the advertisement got a lot of backlash from supporters of Donald Trump. Some were even calling for a boycott of Walmart.
Florida Republican Representative Anna Paulina Luna also had something to say about it
As the calls for boycotts intensify, Walmart has clarified its position. A spokesman for the company said: “The advertisements from Christy Walton are in no way connected to or endorsed by Walmart. She does not serve on the board or play any role in decision making at Walmart.”
