A man known as a ‘lion whisperer’ is now in a desperate fight for survival after being attacked by the very same lion that took the life of one of his coworkers last year. The attack happened at Taigan Safari Park, located in Russian-occupied Crimea and run by Oleg Zubkov. This park is said to be the largest breeding ground in Europe for lions, along with other big cats and predatory mammals. It reportedly houses about 60 African lions. But despite its impressive scale, the park has also been the scene of deep tragedy recently.

Last year, 41-year-old staff member Leokadiya Perevalova was killed after being mauled by a lion. She had made what was later described as a ‘fatal error’ which ultimately led to the brutal attack.

According to Zubkov, the tragic incident with Perevalova happened in October 2024, when she didn’t secure a safety gate properly. That mistake resulted in the lion biting her fatally on the neck.“Lions are the highest predators and they do not forgive mistakes.” Zubkov said at the time.

Now, reports from local media claim that the same lion involved in the earlier attack—which had been allowed to live has turned on Zubkov himself. The 57-year-old park owner was reportedly inside the lion’s enclosure during a feeding session when the incident occurred.

Oleg Zubkov, the park’s founder, has reportedly suffered serious injuries to his head, neck, and lungs. He was rushed to the hospital and is currently in what has been described as a ‘crucial’ condition.Another park worker, 58-year-old Tatyana Aleksagina, showed incredible bravery. She drove a buggy straight into the lion’s enclosure and hurled a bucket at the animal, which caused it to release Zubkov from its grip.

“There was terrible panic… the lion dragged the man by the neck like a toy.” one witness shared. “We shouted for her to come back, and she threw the bucket at the animal, which freed the man and ran away.”

Following that, a guest visiting the safari park reportedly climbed down a pipe into the enclosure in an attempt to rescue Zubkov from further harm. The same witness added more details about what happened next: “Our companion Alexei jumped into the enclosure, realizing that she could not pull him away on her own. He dragged Zubkov to the buggy, laid him down and climbed back up out of danger.”

After being pulled out of the enclosure, Zubkov was quickly put into a Mercedes and taken straight to the hospital for emergency treatment. He was said to be unconscious upon arrival and doctors performed surgery on him that Sunday, June 22.

Someone close to the safari park shared that doctors had performed a complex operation and are doing everything they can—and more to try to save him. They also said: “It is very difficult for his family right now. It is such a shock, like a bolt from the blue. We are all praying for Oleg’s health and speedy recovery!”
