Cordale Sheffield, a 30-year-old from Cleveland, was spending time with his two stepchildren, ages 10 and 11, at the Rainbow Terrace Apartments when a powerful explosion shook the building and launched him outside.

After regaining his bearings, Cordale realized the kids hadn’t made it out and were still trapped inside.

He called out to them and urged them to jump from the window to escape the flames. The boy managed to leap out, but the young girl was “too scared”, so Cordale made the brave decision to go back in and rescue her, according to details shared on a GoFundMe page.

“He had to go back through the building to go get her, and that’s when he got mostly burned. He went back in the fire to save her, but he was already burnt up. I think that’s when his hair caught on fire, when he went back in.” Cordale’s sister, Cierra Alqawi, shared during an interview with News 5 Cleveland.

The courageous act left Cordale with burns covering 92 percent of his body, a devastating injury.

“They removed all of his skin, so he has no skin.” his sister explained.

So far, Cordale has had at least four surgeries. He remains wrapped in bandages from head to toe and is expected to stay in the hospital for at least half a year as he fights through recovery.
