A woman has been arrested in Brazil on suspicion of poisoning Easter eggs and sending them to her ex-boyfriend’s new family, allegedly causing the death of a seven-year-old boy.
Jordélia Pereira Barbosa, 35, is accused of buying, spiking and sending the chocolate to her former partner’s new girlfriend, with officials alleging that she was motivated by ‘revenge and jealousy’.
The eggs were delivered on Wednesday to her ex’s new partner, named in Brazilian media as Mirian Lira, who then shared them with her kids.
They were bought to her home by a motorcycle courier, reportedly accompanied with a note which read: ‘With love, to Mirian Lira. Happy Easter.’
Lira’s young son, Luis Fernando Rocha Silva reportedly fell ill almost instantly and his mother rushed him to Imperatriz City Hospital where he died just hours later in the early hours of Thursday.
His 32-year-old mother remains in hospital in a critical condition along with her daughter, Evelyn Fernanda, who is 13, with both said to be intubated and in serious condition.
Samples of the chocolate eggs have reportedly been sent for forensic analysis to confirm possible poisoning.

The chocolate eggs were reportedly delivered by a motorcycle courier with a note which read: ‘With love, to Mirian Lira. Happy Easter.’
Barbosa was arrested on an intercity bus headed for Santa Inês, where she lives, after staying at a hotel in Imperatriz, the city where her ex-boyfriend’s family are based 200 miles from her home.
Police reportedly found purchase receipts and spoke to Barbosa’s ex-partner as part of their investigation, who reportedly indicated that his ex might be involved.
Cops also shared CCTV footage they said showed Barbosa shopping for chocolate eggs while wearing a black wig to cover her dyed blonde hair and dark sunglasses.
At the counter she is seen holding the box of luxury eggs and starts rummaging through her bag to find a payment card to use.
In a statement at the Santa Inês Regional Police Station, Barbosa reportedly confessed to having bought the chocolate, but denied having added poison.
However police and officials have insisted that there is sufficient evidence to point to Barbosa as the prime suspect in the alleged plot.
Maurício Martins, a security official in the region, told news outlet G1: ‘The evidence suggests, based on several points investigated, that the crime was motivated by revenge and jealousy, given that the author’s ex-husband is the current partner or boyfriend of the victim, who was poisoned along with her two children.
‘There are several indications that clearly point to this woman being the perpetrator of the crime.
‘The police will continue working to strengthen this evidence and present her to the Judiciary to answer for this barbaric crime.’

Lira reportedly received an anonymous call after the eggs were delivered asking if she had received the package.
Police investigating Barbosa reportedly seized two wigs, receipts, cards, scissors, a saw knife and what appeared to be drugs.
An autopsy on victim Luis by the Imperatriz’s Legal Medical Institute is expected to prove poisoning as the cause of death.
Blood tests on the two survivors and lab tests on the remains of the eggs are also being carried out.
