In the early morning hours of July 4, what seemed like harmless leftover fireworks sparked a devastating fire outside her family’s home in Independence, Missouri. Around 5:30 AM, flames engulfed the property, catching everyone off guard while they were still asleep.
“It was a breezy night.” Independence Fire Chief Jimmy Walker told KHSB, explaining how the breeze played a big role in how quickly things got out of hand overnight.
Walker also pointed out that the house didn’t have working smoke detectors at the time, which likely made it harder for anyone to respond in time to escape safely.
Expressing his grief, he said: “To see a young girl who just beat cancer to have it end like this. I’m speaking on all of our folks, our heart goes out and we are all very upset about this as well.” Walker told Fox 4.
Authorities say the fire began on the home’s deck area. Officials believe it was started by lingering “embers” from earlier fireworks celebrations that ignited flammable materials nearby.
Her father, Jerry Brown, confirmed that Jerilynn had just returned home after her final cancer treatment milestone — ringing the bell that marks the end of treatment for many young cancer patients.
The fire didn’t just claim Jerilynn’s life. Sadly, 52-year-old Marc Anthony Young Sr. also died from injuries sustained during the fire, passing away on Sunday after battling for survival for nearly three days, according to his son, Marc Anthony Young Jr.
Meanwhile, Jerilynn’s mother, Liz Stephens, is still in the hospital. She’s currently “fighting for her life” after suffering serious burns. Her husband, Stephen Miller, confirmed her condition.

“In the early morning of July 4th, tragedy struck the lives of Jerry Brown and Liz Stephens in the most unimaginable way.” the page reads.
It goes on to describe the heartbreaking outcome: “A devastating house fire destroyed their home, taking with it everything they owned – and most heartbreakingly, their 13-year-old daughter, Jerrilynn Brown.”
The fundraiser also shared more about the situation they are now facing: “In addition to the loss of their beloved daughter and home, Liz is currently in the hospital, fighting for her life due to injuries sustained in the fire. As Jerry stays by her side, they are navigating unbearable grief and overwhelming uncertainty.”
“No amount can heal this pain, but your support – whether through a donation, a share, or a prayer – can help bring a glimmer of hope to this devastated family. Please consider helping in any way you can. Every dollar and every kind word means the world right now. Thank you for your love and support.”
