Hope on the Horizon: Writers Begin Work on Season 2 of Ransom Canyon
While Netflix has yet to officially renew Ransom Canyon for a second season, there’s already movement behind the scenes. Show creator April Blair confirmed that the writers’ room is up and running, working on new scripts and bold storylines for the beloved Texas-based drama.
“We’ve already started the writers’ room, even though the show hasn’t been picked up yet for Season 2,” Blair told TV Insider.
She teased a major shift in the narrative: “Quinn’s going to go off to New York and come back. How is Staten going to win her back if he’s still haunted?”
🔍 The Finale’s Big Reveal Sets the Stage
The Season 1 finale left fans stunned, with emotional twists and painful truths. Blair revealed that what happened in the finale would deeply impact Season 2.
“Who was behind it, and what really happened, opens up a whole new series of relationship drama between Lucas and Lauren,” she said.
To recap: Staten (played by Josh Duhamel) discovered that Lauren’s (Lizzy Greene) mother — who is also Sheriff Dan’s (Philip Winchester) wife — was the driver in the hit-and-run that killed his teenage son, Randall (Hubert Smielecki). The plot thickens as Lucas’ (Garrett Wareing) brother, Kit (Casey W. Johnson), helped cover it up due to his affair with Margaret (Sarah Minnich).
✨ Morality, Legacy, and Love
Blair emphasizes that Ransom Canyon is grounded in themes of legacy, morality, and emotional truth.
“Westerns are morality tales. For Sheriff Dan, this is about his legacy and the people he loves. He has to choose between doing what’s right for his family and what’s right for the law. That’s his morality moment,” she explained.
This classic western dilemma provides a rich foundation for further development in Season 2 and beyond.
💙 A Spinoff? Meet the Original Love Triangle
A possible spinoff is also on the table. Blair hinted at diving deeper into Staten’s past, especially his romance with his late wife Amalah, portrayed in flashbacks by Ava Phillippe.
“That could be a whole spinoff of its own… the OG love triangle of Ransom Canyon,” Blair teased.
Interestingly, Ava’s appearance caused a buzz on set: “A cameraman came up to me and said, ‘That girl looks just like Reese Witherspoon.’ I said, ‘Funny you should say that.’”
Blair also confirmed that young Staten and Quinn’s backstory was carefully cast and may play a bigger role in future seasons or in a standalone show.
⏱️ Season 2 May Include a Time Jump
Though nothing is set in stone, Blair revealed that Season 2 may open with a six-month time jump, following Quinn’s planned trip to New York.
“Quinn needs to go away and save her ranch. And we need to explore the fallout of Davis goading Staten into that punch, and the tension between Davis and Staten’s father, the senator,” Blair explained.
