In his shocking autobiography, Gerard Depardieu revealed that he had to work as a prostitute for money, servicing truck drivers, digging up graves and robbing protesters. His happiest moments were vacations in public airport toilets.
The candid book by the 65-year-old legend of French cinema shocked his fans. The autobiography, titled “It Happened That Way,” reveals that Gerard Depardieu was able to become an actor thanks to the support of homosexuals. And in his youth, Depardieu was forced to service pedophiles
“At the age of ten, I looked fifteen. From my youth, I realized that I was attracted to homosexuals. When men asked me for intimate services, I asked for money in return,” wrote Gerard Depardieu. His clients were truck drivers
“I was very happy then. I heard about flights to Buenos Aires, Singapore, Tokyo,” says Depardieu.
The actor also sometimes helped cemetery thieves dig up fresh graves to steal jewelry and shoes from the dead. At 16, he spent three weeks in prison for stealing a car. Sometimes he robbed his clients. “At 20, the bandit in me was alive and well,” Depardieu said, adding that he could simply beat up a person without taking anything from his things.
And in May 1968, the future actor made a good profit from anti-government protests, taking watches and wallets from students’ pockets. Depardieu chose those who decided to spend the night on the street, on the barricades.
In between stealing and prostituting, the actor sold cigarettes, buying them at a NATO base located in Châteauroux and selling them at twice the price.
According to the actor, he began studying theater arts thanks to the support of representatives of homosexual minorities: an agent looking for talents for the gay theater paid for his studies. The official version was as follows: Depardieu, who dreamed of becoming an actor, came to an audition at the acting school of Jean-Laurent Cochet, who immediately noticed his talent. Cochet not only allowed him to study for free, but also paid for a course of treatment with a speech therapist out of his own pocket: Depardieu stuttered since childhood and communicated mainly with gestures and short phrases.
The actor blames his family for his misfortunes and crooked fate. According to Depardieu, he was not a wanted child, his mother said that she tried to have an abortion several times, piercing herself with knitting needles.
His family was so poor that his parents could not afford to call a midwife. Gerard had to help his mother deliver his brothers and sisters from the age of seven. His father was illiterate, left the family farm early and went to the city to work as a mechanic. His mother was from a family of military pilots. They lived on social benefits.
An uncouth peasant – this is how Depardieu constantly calls himself. Nevertheless, he married an aristocrat and acting student Elisabeth Guigneau. The marriage with her lasted 26 years. They had two children – Guillaume and Julie. Depardieu complains that he could never find good words for his children – his father did not say that he loved his son either. “I know how to say other people’s words, but when it comes to my feelings, I become my father’s son,” the actor says.
Just like his father, Gerard began to drink heavily. Recently, he bragged that he could empty 14 bottles a day, starting with champagne in the morning and ending with whiskey at night. He crashed his scooter while drunk, attacked photographers by breathing fumes on them, and angered fellow passengers on planes when he couldn’t wait until he reached the toilet.
“I’m obsessed with the sounds of my body, the beating of my heart, the gurgling of my intestines, the creaking of my joints. It’s become a phobia to the point that if I’m alone in a hotel, I have to drink to avoid hearing these sounds. I can’t sleep unless I’m drunk,” says Depardieu.
